Dr. Katherine Holshausen

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Katherine Holshausen is registered to provide services to adults with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO).

Training/Work Experience: Dr. Holshausen completed her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Queen’s University and her predoctoral residency at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Over her career, Dr. Holshausen has worked in several settings including community clinics, university training clinics, hospital settings, and private practice. In the past 10 years, Dr. Holshausen has delivered over 50 workshops, lectures, and conference presentations, has published 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles and chapters. Prior to working exclusively in private practice, Dr. Holshausen was the Research Director and Clinical Lead in the Community Psychiatry Clinic at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. She is an Assistant Professor (part-time) in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University.

Presenting Concerns: Dr. Holshausen sees adults with a variety of concerns including:

  • Trauma/PTSD
  • Anxiety
  • Depression/low mood
  • Low self-esteem
  • Managing big emotions (anger, shame, guilt)
  • Navigating difficult relationships and/or difficulties in relationships
  • Life transitions
  • Developing self-compassionanxiety

Approach: Dr. Holshausen’s approach is centered around using compassion, warmth, humour, and evidence-based strategies to achieve therapy goals. Dr. Holshausen uses a number of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Emotion-focused Therapy (EFT), Mindfulness, and therapies specifically designed for working with trauma such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure (PE). Dr. Holshausen is guided by her belief that everyone needs help from time to time because life can be tough, and that working with an expert is the best way to cultivate and maintain emotional health.

Outside of MindFit: Outside of work, Dr. Holshausen travels with her husband and their daughter, loves drinking homemade lattes, and is in perpetual pursuit of the best sushi restaurants around.
